Collaborating with industry initiatives

We created a unique learning platform that is freely available to all businesses in the gemstones and jewellery industry. We know that smaller organisations in particular, although committed to improving and embedding responsible business practices, do not always have the knowledge, budget or compliance levels to adopt existing certification schemes or meet client expectations right away.

Instead of establishing a new standard-setting organisation, or duplicating existing standards, the Gemstones and Jewellery Community Platform builds on existing schemes and initiatives. We believe this approach will have the greatest success in generating positive change and help ensure the harmonisation of standards in the gemstone and jewellery industry.

The platform is also intended to help you learn about expectations of existing schemes, and how the use of the platform's tools and resources can help you to learn and prepare for meeting requirements of those in the areas of environment, social and governance.

We continually monitor and review initiatives around standards in the mining and mineral supply chains. This allows us to stay informed about new trends and, where possible, incorporate new thinking into our learning platform.

Our partners

Many industry associations, voluntary initiatives, civil society organisations and local groups are working to create a more sustainable and transparent coloured gemstone industry. Their aim is to have a positive impact on the supply chain.

Below are a couple of the partners we are working with - more to be announced soon. Please click on each to learn more.

cibjo

CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, represents the interests of all individuals, organisations and companies earning their livelihoods from jewellery, gemstones and precious metals. CIBJO covers the entire jewellery, gemstone and precious metals sectors vertically, from mine to marketplace, and horizontally within each of the component sectors in the various production, manufacturing and trading centres. In January 2019, the Board of Directors of CIBJO approved the first edition of the Responsible Sourcing Book, which provides a framework and guidance for due diligence related to the responsible sourcing of gemstones and precious metals in the jewellery sector.

On April 23, 2019, against the backdrop of the OECD Responsible Minerals Forum in Paris, CIBJO and the Coloured Gemstones Working Group (CGWG), the founding group behind The Gemstone and Jewellery Community Platform, signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Both parties committed to jointly developing management tools and resources that will help businesses of all sizes and activities in the industry implement best practices for responsible sourcing. As an outcome of the cooperation, we have jointly developed the Guidance to CIBJO’s Responsible Sourcing Book which will be hosted on the Gemstone and Jewellery Community Platform.

Responsible-jewellery-council-1233

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is a non-profit, standards-setting and certification organisation. It has more than 1100 member companies that span the jewellery supply chain from mine to retail.

Since its creation, the Coloured Gemstones Working Group (CGWG), the founding group behind The Gemstones and Jewellery Community Platform, and the RJC have enjoyed continuous collaboration based on the pursuit of a mutual goal of promoting responsible sourcing practices in the jewellery supply chain. This relationship was formalized in 2016 by the signing of a Letter of Understanding. The CGWG presented the materials developed on the environmental, social and governance practices in the coloured gemstone supply chain to further enable the RJC’s exploration and final commitment to the inclusion of coloured gemstones into the RJC revised Code of Practices, launched in April 2019.

We are continuing our cooperation with the RJC with the goal to provide useful resources to the gemstone and jewellery industry and to avoid duplication of efforts and multiplication of tools.

GemCloud-Logo

GemCloud is a software company developing digital solutions specifically tailored for the coloured gemstone industry. Founded by gemstone industry professionals and technology innovators, GemCloud has been created with the purpose of modernizing the coloured gemstone value chain while supporting the adoption of best responsible practices by producers and traders.

GemCloud enables its users to sync their inventory to GemCloud powered marketplaces. This is made possible only after a dual verification process. Vendors must commit and progress along the Gemstones and Jewellery Community Platform journey and on another side, gemstones are verified by one of the GemCloud partner laboratories before being approved.

On 22nd May 2020, GemCloud and the Coloured Gemstones Working Group, the founding group behind The Gemstone and Jewellery Community Platform (GJCP), formalised their working relationship by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the joint development of resources and tools on responsible sourcing and production for the coloured gemstones industry.

Aware of the social and environmental challenges that surround the coloured gemstones industry, and eager to contribute to catalysing positive change within the industry, GemCloud will introduce an expectation for its vendors to join this initiative, and to take steps along the Gemstones and Jewellery Community Platform journey.
